Eric Sprott’s Sprott Asset Management Initiated Stakes in Petaquilla Minerals and Wi-Lan

Eric Sprott’s Sprott Asset Management filed 13G for its position in Petaquilla Minerals Ltd. (PTQ.TO) and Wi-Lan, Inc. (WIN.TO) on November 8th. As reported in the filings, Sprott Asset Management now has 15.14 million shares in the PTQ.TO, giving a 6.8% passive stake; and 8.94 million shares in WIN.TO, or 7.2% passive stake. Sprott Asset Management did not have any share in either Petaquilla Minerals or Wi-Lan before, so these are brand new positions. Since the daily trading volumes of both stocks are quite small, Sprott Asset Management might start to enter in early October at near $0.65 per share for PTQ.TO, and $6 per share for WIN.TO. On Tuesday, PTQ.TO and WIN.TO are closed at $0.77 and $7.39, respectively.

Sprott Asset Management is under Eric Sprott, who is the Senior Portfolio Manager of the Sprott Canadian Equity Fund, Sprott Hedge Fund LP & LP II, and Sprott Bull/Bear RSP Fund. He has a portfolio value of more than $1.1 billion, eighty percent in which are invested in Basic Materials sector.

Petaquilla Minerals Ltd. engages in the mining and mineral exploration of gold-bearing mineral properties in Republic of Panama. The company focuses on gold and silver mineralization, and other precious metal mineral deposits through its 12 subsidiaries and one joint venture interest. The company was formerly known as Adrian Resources Ltd. before October 2004. The company was founded in 1985 and is based in Vancouver, Canada.

Wi-LAN Inc. engages in the development, acquisitions, and licenses in a range of intellectual property that drives products in communications and consumer electronics markets. The Company has licensed technology patents to enable other companies to sell products, such as wireless fidelity (Wi-Fi), Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access, Inc. (WiMAX), LTE, code division multiple access (CDMA), direct subscriber line (DSL), data over cable service interface specification (DOCSIS), Mesh, multi-mode wireless, Bluetooth and V-Chip. The company was founded in 1992 and is headquartered in Ottawa, Canada.
