Could Obama Save Apple Inc. (AAPL)?

As we recently discussed, Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) lost a big battle with Samsung in the court room.

Here is what is going on: Apple is facing a ban on imports of some older devices, including the iPhone 4 and iPhone 3G, after a U.S. trade agency said the company infringed on a patent owned by Samsung.

While this may not sound like a big deal, it is a major loss for Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) and a huge win for Samsung.

It is no surprise to any that these two tech titans are slugging it out for top spot in the smartphone market. A decision like this is one that can result in a shift of power.

The question now is this: what is Apple going to do next?

Right now, there is not much Cupertino can do. That being said, there is a good chance that the company will appeal the ruling and look to have it overturned.

Bloomberg Television’s “Bloomberg Surveillance,” Brian Blair of Wedge Partners recently discussed the big loss by Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) and whether or not President Obama may be able to come to the rescue.

Here is what Blair had to say about the ongoing saga between Apple and Samsung:

“It is not a large defeat but it is a very negative headline because Apple had won the ruling last year against Samsung and that looked like it was going to be the end of it. But that was a federal court in San Francisco. Now this is the ITC, which is a different federal agency. And they said look Apple you actually did violate a patent as well so you could possibly face the ban of some key products.”

Blair does a nice job breaking down the story, showing that this is not the end of the world for Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) but bad press nonetheless.

He then went on to talk about how the president could potentially get involved:

“He (referring to Tim Cook) needs Obama to say we are not going to allow this ban to stand, we don’t want to see products banned in this kind of a manner, and he needs Obama to basically invalidate this ban so that Apple can continue to sell the iPhone 4 and iPad.”
