Blackberry Music Sharing: Are you one of the many people who has fallen in love with the Research In Motion Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) music sharing service? Although BlackBerry’s BBM music sharing service has only been in existence for a couple of years, it appears that it is going away for good.
According to a report by Mobilesyrup, Research In Motion Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) has decided to terminate the service no later than June 2, 2013.
In short, this service gave BlackBerry/Research In Motion Messenger users the ability to share music with other contacts. While there was a monthly fee in place, the service was popular among a large core of users.
Research In Motion Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) sent out a mass email to subscribers of the service, explaining the decision and hoping to make things a bit easier on those who relied upon it regularly.
Here is a brief excerpt from the email from BlackBerry/Research In Motion:
“BBMT Music service will be discontinued as of June 2, 2013. For paying customers, April is the last month that you will be billed. In May, as your BBM contacts stop using the service, songs in your playlists will begin to turn grey and will no longer be available.”
“Though BBM Music is going away, you can still listen to great music on your BlackBerry. We’re giving you a 30-day pass to Rdio, which gives you unlimited, on-demand access to more than 18 million songs, including the latest hits and classic albums.”
At this point, it is hard to say why Research In Motion Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) made this decision. Is the company looking to spend its money elsewhere? Are they worried about the competition, such as Pandora and Rdio? This could be one reason, since the email does touch on how the company will be giving a free 30 day pass to Rdio.
