Apple Inc. (AAPL)’s Mac Thriving On Microsoft Corporation (MSFT)’s Blunders: Walter Mossberg

It is not just the iPhone that has been raking in big sales numbers for Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL), the Mac sales have been off the roof as well. On CNBC, Walter Mossberg, Re/code co-executive editor, revealed how blunders by the tech giant’s rival, Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) have helped the company’s product to succeed.

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL)

“[…] The second thing that I would say is major blunders by Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT). Two of the last three versions of Windows have been basically flops with consumers, and so people were willing to look at the Mac, even though it costs more […],” said Mossberg.

By putting the horse before the cart, or by mentioning Mossberg’s second reason for the success of Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL)’s Mac, I wanted to highlight its importance. It is not easy to sell a product that has less functionality and a higher price tag, which Mac has always had. There has to be a failure, or blunder as Mossberg likes to call it, of the competitor, and that is exactly what Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) has been making in the past.

Moving on to the first reason for the success of Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL)’s Mac, which Mossberg mentioned on the interview, we gain an insight into appreciating the role of chance and luck as well. Of course, there has to someone intelligent enough at the company’s helm to fully exploit that opportunity as well. Apple pretty much had that base covered with its ex-CEO Steve Jobs.

“[…] This is over and above anything Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) did itself. The internet equalized the Mac with Windows, because at one time when that blue iMac came out, there wasn’t a lot of software for the Mac computer, as compared to Windows, but when people started to mostly use their computers mostly to go on the web and to email and stuff like that, the Mac was an equal citizen on the web, and that was an enormous help […],” explained Mossberg.
