iPad Vs Netbook: Apple Knows How to Kill More Than The Competition

iPad Vs Netbook: Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) is well known for killing the competition. While many companies try to compete with the Cupertino-based company, not many have had much success over the years.

Tim Cook holding chartNow, it appears that Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) is killing more than the competition. Instead, the company is taking out entire industries. This time around: netbooks.

If you recall, the netbook craze hit the world pretty hard back in 2007. These devices were smaller than laptops and had less functionality than its big brother. That being said, many people were buying netbooks because of the small size.

Unfortunately for those who may want to purchase a netbook in the future, it doesn’t appear that you will have much longer. Thanks to the Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPad, these devices are on their way out.

A recent report from HIS iSuppli, discusses this trend in greater detail. More specifically, it talks about how the iPad has begun to crush the netbook industry.

The Los Angeles Times took a closer look at the data, adding the following:

“According to the report, shipments of netbooks in 2013 will be mere 3.97 million, a nosedive of 72% from the 14.13 million shipped last year. That’s a long way down from the 32.14 million netbooks shipped in 2010, the peak for a product introduced in 2007.”

As you can see, things are going south in a hurry for netbooks. Not only did sales decline 72 percent year over year, but the decrease is huge when compared to the peak of the market in 2007.

With all this in mind, you may be thinking that sales of nearly 4 million is not all that bad. However, the report has some more bad news. It projects that shipments will be right around 264,000 in 2014. And for 2015, the firm is not expecting netbooks to even be in existence.

Craig Stice, senior principal analyst for computer platforms at IHS in the report, added the following:

“Netbooks shot to popularity immediately after launch because they were optimized for low cost, delivering what many consumers believed as acceptable computer performance. However, netbooks began their descent to oblivion with the introduction in 2010 of Apple’s iPad.”

As you can see, the Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPad is responsible for killing the netbook industry. Of course, most people agree that this is a good tradeoff.
