Apple Inc. (AAPL) iWatch Update: Is Cupertino Watching The Competition?

Is Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) getting serious about an iWatch? While many people hope the answer is yes, it is hard to know exactly what Cupertino is thinking. That being said, we have covered the story of Apple seeking a trademark for “iWatch in Japan.” Does this mean anything?

Whether or not Apple moves forward with this device in the near future is up in the air. That being said, the move to trademark the term iWatch is definitely doing its part in generating interest within the rumor mill.

Apple Inc. (AAPL)While Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) continues to consider whether or not a smart watch is a good move, there is reason to believe that the competition is pushing ahead.

In a recent Bloomberg Television’s “First Up” segment, Bloomberg’s Cory Johnson discusses the Apple trademark as well as what Samsung is doing with its own wearable computing device.

The fear for Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) has to be another company, particularly Samsung, beating it to the punch. Cupertino is already locked up in a smartphone battle with Samsung, and doesn’t want to lose out on its opportunity to win big in the smart watch market due to a delay.

For more information on what is going on and what to keep an eye out for in the months to come, let’s take a closer look at what Bloomberg’s Cory Johnson had to say:

“We don’t know what Apple is working on. We do know that Apple has about a hundred engineers working on a wearable computing device to be worn on the hand. We know about a patent they filed, they even updated a patent, that shows some really cool technology that might be possible. But now we know this: in Japan they are seeking a trademark on the name iWatch. Does this mean they are coming out with something they are going to call the iWatch? Does this mean they want to keep somebody else from doing the same thing? We don’t know. What we know is that they are going after that patent. And it does suggest there is a new device on the way from Apple.”

This is an interesting story that is sure to develop even further in the weeks to come.
