Apple Vs Google: Apple, Google Strongly Competitive In Portable Gaming

Apple Vs Google: There used to be a time when consumers were spending an insane amount of money on handheld games. While these are still popular to a certain extent, a growing number of people are beginning to focus their efforts on Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) iOS games as well as those offered by Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) Play.

This is something that App Annie, in partnership with International Data Corporation (IDC), took a closer look at in its recent Quarter 1 2013 Portable Gaming Report.

With so many people turning to these types of games, it only makes sense for Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) and Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) to spend more time focusing on this market.

With all this in mind, let’s take a closer look at some of the information provided in this report.

Above all else, it is important to note that both Apple iOS and Google Play achieved growth in “game downloads and consumer spending.” This is in line with a decrease in amount of handheld game spending.

At this point, you may be wondering which company is actually out in front. According to the report Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) “iOS is now the leader in consumer spending on games.”

Google Inc (GOOG)While this is not a surprise to most, it is important to note that Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) Play is not far behind. In fact, the report notes that it is “likely to surpass gaming-optimized handhelds in 2Q13.”

The graph on the next page shows just how much growth Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) and Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) are experiencing in this market. While both companies are sure to be excited about this growth, there is no denying that both want to land the top spot. Right now, Apple is out in front but Google is closing fast.

On the same graph, you will also see that gaming-optimized handhelds took a huge hit from the last quarter of 2012 through the first quarter of 2013. Here is an explanation from App Annie:

“Gaming-optimized handhelds experienced significant decreases in consumer spending and packaged game shipments due to seasonality.”

Now that Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) and Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) are both hitting this market hard and doing big things, it will be interesting to see where the tech giants go next.
