Over the past few months, we have talked about the proposed Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) Campus 2, slated to be built in Cupertino, including the many benefits it could potentially bring to the area. While there are definite advantages associated with this project, it is important to note that there could be some big drawbacks as well.

Apple Inc. (AAPL)With all this in mind, the City of Cupertino is paying close attention to what this project would mean to the area – both the good and the bad. From traffic to noise to air quality, the city wants to know that Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) is bringing more good than harm to the city and those who call it home.

The City of Cupertino recently released its “Apple Campus 2 Project – Draft Environmental Impact Report (DEIR).” In short, the city used this report as a means of taking a closer look at the overall environmental impact of the company’s planned “spaceship” campus.

Here is an excerpt from the piece, explaining what it entails:

“In compliance with the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA), this Draft EIR describes the environmental consequences of the Apple Campus 2 Project (project). This Draft EIR is designed to fully inform decision-makers in the City of Cupertino, other responsible and trustee agencies, and the general public of the potential environmental consequences of the proposed project. The project sponsor is Apple Inc. The City of Cupertino (City) is the lead agency for environmental review of the Apple Campus 2 Project. This EIR will be used by City staff, responsible agencies, and the public in their review of the proposed project.”

Despite the fact that Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) is pushing the fact that this would be something good for the city and surrounding area, the company has a lot of hoops to jump through before the project gets underway. The city is not going to let Apple move forward unless they are 100 percent sure that there will not be a negative impact on the environment and quality of life.

The good thing for Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) is that they will have the chance to show the city why the campus is a good idea, including its plans for mitigating any concerns.

This is an interesting story that we will continue to track over the next few months.
