Want Higher Quality Apple Inc. (AAPL) iPhone Pictures? Coming Soon

The best Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) patents are the ones that can change the future of technology for the better (such as these ones). While Cupertino believes that every patent has its place, some are easier to visualize being used than others.

Apple Inc. (AAPL)Earlier today, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office granted Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) a patent for an imaging system that can help improve the quality of images taken with devices including the iPhone.

This may sound like a giant task, being that the current iPhone does a great job with this, but in true Apple fashion the company is always looking to improve. With the ability to process data from multiple sensors, while also automatically correcting common issues, such as lens aberrations, this patent can do big things.

Here is the abstract, taken from the official patent:

“Various techniques are provided for processing image data acquired using a digital image sensor. In accordance with aspects of the present disclosure, one such technique may relate to the processing of image data in a system that supports multiple image sensors. In one embodiment, the image processing system may include control circuitry configured to determine whether a device is operating in a single sensor mode (one active sensor) or a dual sensor mode (two active sensors). When operating in the single sensor mode, data may be provided directly to a front-end pixel processing unit from the sensor interface of the active sensor. When operating in a dual sensor mode, the image frames from the first and second sensors are provided to the front-end pixel processing unit in an interleaved manner. For instance, in one embodiment, the image frames from the first and second sensors are written to a memory, and then read out to the front-end pixel processing unit in an interleaved manner.”

As an Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhone user, it goes without saying that you don’t think too much about the technology behind the camera in your smartphone. Instead, you take pictures and hope for the best. Apple is looking to improve the quality of each picture, even for those who have no clue of what they are doing.

This is one of those Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) patents that could put a lot of pressure on the competition, especially those that claim to have a better camera experience.

The patent was originally filed for on August 18, 2010. The inventors are listed as Guy Cote, Jeffrey Frederiksen, Joseph Bratt, Shun Go, and  Timothy Millet.

How do you feel about this patent? Do you agree that higher quality pictures could take the iPhone to new heights? Share your thoughts and catch up on another patent filing (this one is just as exciting).
