Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA)’s CEO Elon Musk has big interest in space travel and technology. Space Exploration Technologies Corporation (SpaceX) was founded by Musk in 2002, aiming to achieve cost reduction for space travel and thereby enabling colonization in Mars. FBN’s Neil Cavuto reported on Fox Business that Musk will be kicking off his activities for human Mars mission in 2015 and he discussed about this with Former NASA Astronaut Tom Jones.

Will Tesla Motors Inc (TSLA) CEO make Ford Motor Company (F) CEO Jealous with this Payout?

Cavuto reported that Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) CEO wanted to take big steps early in 2015 for human mission to Mars. Jones mentioned it is better that someone is getting started with colonization process sooner rather than later. Jones added that NASA was pretty much flat in budgets for these kind of mission and he was very happy to hear that Musk is planning to start the process with sending Robots to Mars followed by manned missions as well.

Cavuto pointed out that NASA has done unmanned missions to Mars many times and Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA)’s CEO is planning to repeat that first, but all on his own with some financial help. Jones feels that it is going to be a big task and might take a lot of time.

“It’s really a touch technical problem. It’s going to take in my view  25 or 30 years of homework, a new propulsion systems, much more reliable life support required. You have got to find out how to safeguard Astronauts from radiation. But he you can do is he can attack the launch cost end of it. How to get all this machinery up into space for something it is affordable and that’s where his innovations is going to really pay off,” Jones said.

Cavuto pointed out that still some outside technical help is needed for United States to get to space and he questioned Jones if that dependency could end. Jones mentioned that it needs some direction from Government. He added that proper vision has to be set for Mars mission. Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA)’s CEO Musk has to anyway compete against the likes of Boeing to get some contracts to work on that space travel missions.
