Should BlackBerry Ltd (BBRY) Change Its Operating System For Resurgence?

BlackBerry Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) has reported its third fiscal quarter 2015 earnings, which was not very good, but not bad too. The company did beat the streets expectations on EPS, but missed the estimate on revenues. The company also reported a net loss, which was much lower than the one reported in the same period last year. CEO, John Chen expects the company to generate positive cash flow sooner than expected. Meanwhile, Founding partner at Eniac Partners, Nihal Mehta talked on CNBC about BlackBerry Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) and its future.

BlackBerry Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY)’s share prices went down by more than 5% after the mixed quarter results. BlackBerry Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) is looking forward to its new phone, ‘Classic’ to capture some market share. BlackBerry Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) had more than 50% of global smartphone market share in January 2009, but now it has less than 10% market share, which showed the intensity of the slump that the company had to face in the last few years. Many investors are hoping that BlackBerry Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) could be back in business with its new smartphones. But Mehta doesn’t think so. He feels that they are great hardware manufacturers, but they need to get rid of the operating system to make inroads into the market. He feels that BlackBerry Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) should follow Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) in following Android or some other OS for its hardware.

“I don’t think so, I was the biggest BlackBerry fan on earth. I had literally every BlackBerry made. […] I think they are a great hardware manufacturer; they got to get rid of the Operating system. Do what Microsoft did, leverage may be Android and roll out the devices. But when they try to combine the software with the hardware, they are not as effective as the competition,” Mehta said.

Mehta feels that BlackBerry Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) devices has its own set of fans, because the keyboard is addictive and security of the device is also good. He added that it is difficult for the BlackBerry Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) devices to reach outside the niche royal circle at the moment. He thinks that they have to make some strategic changes to effect a comeback.
