Responding to criticism about Microsoft’s [lack of] mobile strategy, Chairman Bill Gates admitted it was “clearly a mistake.” While he didn’t fault Ballmer, he didn’t entirely support him either.

Ballmer has often misjudged competitor products. In fact, he laughed at the introduction of the iPhone and called it “the most expensive phone in the world.” Since its debut, the iPhone has redefined the smartphone market. The Apple device also ignited a battle for a space that Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) had heavily invested in–the now obsolete Windows Mobile operating system. Who’s laughing now?

Saying bye-bye to Ballmer could set Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) free and on a different, more lucrative path.
