Chris Shumway

Chris Shumway is the Founder and Managing Partner of Shumway Capital, a private investment firm focused on private investments, public investments, seed investments and strategic/venture capital.  Shumway Capital managed external funds that grew to over $8 billion in 2011 from $70 million in 2002 and was recognized as a top 10 performing manager by Barron’s Magazine.  In 2011, Chris Shumway decided to return outside capital to concentrate on a long-term investment strategy for firm Partners.

During the roughly nine years that the Shumway Capital funds were in operation, they produced average annualized returns of 17%, outperforming the S&P 500 by 14% per annum with volatility one-third of that of the S&P 500.  Mr. Shumway still manages his own assets and those of his Partners, focusing on a longer term investment strategy, including private equity and seeding.  Shumway Capital’s seed capital has helped to establish a number of other successful investment firms including JAT Capital Management, Glade Brook Capital Partners, Tide Point Capital Management and Trend Capital Management which collectively manage in excess of $4 billion of assets.  Shumway provided $100 million each to several former employees as seed capital.|

Prior to founding Shumway Capital, Mr. Shumway was a Senior Managing Director and Management Committee member at Tiger Management.  He is a graduate of the University of Virginia and Harvard Business School.  In addition to managing Shumway Capital, Mr. Shumway serves as a visiting professor at the University of Virginia, teaching global investing.
