Google Inc (GOOGL)’s YouTube Counter Broken By Gangnam Style: Rolfe Winkler

Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL)’s YouTube did not see it coming, but the popularity of Gangnam Style knows no bounds as it brought down the video platform’s counter. On Fox Business, Wall Street Journal’s reporter, Rolfe Winkler talked about the issue while discussing the top trending videos on YouTube this year.

“[…] The interesting thing, and this sort of underlines the fact that YouTube is all about music is that Gangnam Style has now got up to about to 2.1 billion views, and not too long ago a couple of weeks ago YouTube put out a post saying it in fact go so many views that its system could no longer handle it. The counter, they had to update the way they count views […],” informed Winkler.

Music videos are indeed the most popular component of Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL)’s video sharing platform. The top video in the non music category, which was the horrifying tale of the ‘Giant Spider Dog’ all the way from Poland had much less views than the top video in the music category. Katy Perry’s dark horse received 7 times more views than the Polish horror thriller.

Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL) has also recently set up another studio for its content providers in New York. The tech giant regognizes the potential of the video platform. Other tech companies like Yahoo are trying very hard to make a mark in this segment and it was also recently reported that they are trying to convince some of the YouTube stars to jump ships.

“[…] YouTube is probably the fastest growing part of their [Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL)] advertising business, so it is very important to support the kind of content that they put on YouTube. Advertisers, that is the other thing, in addition to the music and non music videos there is a whole bunch of Ads that are getting run in long form on YouTube. Advertisers are discovering this is a great medium for them as well, […],” remarked Winkler.
