Google Inc (GOOGL) Investing $1.16 Billion In Space Exploration At Former Moffett Field Naval Air Station

Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL) is not just a technology services provider and developer, it’s also a science geek and researcher. The company’s subsidiary Planetary Ventures LLC signed a second long-term lease with  National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to have a broader spectrum for space exploration. TheStreet depicted the tech giant’s whereabouts though former air bases and its interest in the field.

“Google has signed a long-term lease for part of a historic Navy air base, where it plans to renovate three massive hangars and use them for projects involving aviation, space exploration and robotics. The giant Internet company will pay $1.16 billion in rent over the 60 years for the property,” said J.R. deBart.

Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL) has already been working on different projects related to space travel and celestial bodies’ study and research, and some of the results from these activities are widely available through Google Earth 5.0. Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL) hasn’t disclosed any particular experiments that will be pursued on the perimeter of the base, but it promises to give scientists and science-passionate people fundamental insights on the Universe beyond the limits Earth’s atmosphere.

“The 1,000-acre site is part of the former Moffett Field Naval Air Station on the San Francisco Peninsula. Google plans to invest more than $200 million to refurbish the hangars and add other improvements, including a museum or educational facility that will showcase the history of Moffett and Silicon Valley, according to a NASA statement,” informed J.R. deBart.

Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL) also intends to sponsor other private entities into developing rovers that will conquer the Moon’s surface. The $30 million prize will be given to the teams which have less than 10% in government funding, which will manage to land safely a robot on the moon, move 500 meters (1640 feet) on, above or below the natural satellite’s surface, and send to Earth HDTV Mooncasts for public display. Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL) makes the remuneration available until December 31 2015.
