Speaking of questionable engineering decisions, touchscreen functionality on a laptop is still a hard sell. On a device like the Asus Transformer, where the screen can serve as a tablet, touchscreen functionality makes far more sense.

The takeaway from the Chromebook Pixel is simple: Google’s engineers can put together an impressive device. This might have much bigger implications for Google’s future products, including the tablet and smartphone space. It lends credibility to their hardware capabilities in the same way the Surface has for Microsoft. It also gives clearer insight into Google’s plans, where hardware is an integral part of the strategy. It also is telling Google targeted the device away from those of its hardware partners, reducing the likelihood of conflict. In the end, the Pixel isn’t going to upset the laptop/ultrabook market, but it lays a solid foundation for the future.
