Even as startups gain an insurmountable edge as far as privacy goes, the need for tailored content continues to surge. Attitudes such as “I don’t want to know who went for fishing or what you had for lunch” are quickly taking root and in the process weighing on Facebook. In view of this, budding social networks with slants toward particular audiences are mushrooming. Be it a particular demographic, culture, sport or genre of music, startups are seeking to deliver relevant and specific content to diverse audiences.

Although Facebook’s global penetration is enthralling, it will soon have to face off with mounting privacy concerns and the need for tailored content. As it ponders on how to handle this, startups are making notable headways. Is this Facebook’s biggest hurdle yet?
