Amazon.com, Inc. (AMZN) To Take On Pandora Media Inc (P)

Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) is upgrading its free music streaming service on Prime Music as the e-commerce giant looks to better compete against other similar services offered by the likes of Pandora Media Inc (NYSE:P) and iTunes. The company has now added ad-free music streaming stations for its iOS users to be known as ‘Prime Stations’.

Amazon.com, Inc.(NASDAQ:AMZN) is also adding personalized recommendations for its music streaming service, a feature that will allow for better highlighting of songs, albums as well as playlists that Prime Members might like, based on their playing history. Personalization will improve based on how often one uses the service, users can also train the algorithm to better suit their favorite songs by tapping thumbs up or thumbs down to indicate their favorite tracks and artist.

Prime Station is not an entirely new service as it was previously made available to users on other platforms starting back in the fall. The feature has also been available on the web version as well as in a desktop app for PC. Amazon users on iOS devices had yet to have access to something similar despite having made numerous requests. However, the service has yet to make its way to Android application on Google Play.

The addition of the feature puts Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN)’s streaming service almost at par with other major competitors in the music streaming business. Prime Music is one of the many benefits that Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) includes on its $99 a year membership program in Amazon Prime, which also comes with a two day shipping and access to Prime Instant Video.

Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) may need to increase the service catalog of Prime Music if it is to compete at par with the more established brands in the space. The e-commerce giant had signed deals with Warner Music Sony and other independent labels. A lack of a similar deal with Universal music means users cannot have access to artists like Katy Perry and Kanye West; forcing the service to be limited to just over a million songs.
