I am not much of an artist. I have never been able to draw anything that even remotely resembles the subject that I am attempting to interpret, or painted something abstract without it looking like I just knocked some tubes of paint over onto my paper. I am surely not alone in this. I love art, and I am so enamored with the artistic community and those who possess the necessary talent to execute works of art that adequately express whatever feeling or thought they are putting onto paper. I wish I could be like them!

When you really think about it, art is not something meant to be set aside for those who happen to be incredibly gifted. Art is a method of relaxation. It is a way to express who you are without having to explain. It is a beautiful thing that the entire world can and should participate in. Does this mean that everyone will be able to sell their works for thousands of dollars, or find their pieces lining the walls of museums for thousands of years after their death? Of course not! But luckily, there is one man who helped me to see that art is actually very approachable. In the words of Bob Ross, “We don’t make mistakes, just happy little accidents.”

Bob Ross brought happiness, creativity, and fearlessness to millions who watched his extraordinarily prolific television show The Joy of Painting. People watched as he painted his beautiful works of art, narrating his steps along the way, and explaining that anyone can paint if they give it a try and are patient and forgiving to themselves. The moral of the story is, don’t take yourself too seriously, and don’t get hung up on who might have more natural talent than you when it comes to painting. What better way to have some fun, relax, and enjoy yourself than sipping on your favorite drink while leisurely completing a pretty painting with some friends by your side?

If you’ve never been to a wine and paint type of class, you might not know exactly what to expect. Have no fear, you’re in for a fun time! These classes are aimed at helping you unlock your artistic talents and creativity in an atmosphere that is not at all intimidating or competitive. Everyone is there to have a good time and connect with great people. Most courses are taught step-by-step (a la Bob Ross) at a very doable pace. All of the materials that you could possibly need will be provided to you (generally; some courses require you to bring one item, like a canvas), along with a whole lot of inspiration. You will walk away knowing basic skills like mixing colors, how to use different brushes to achieve different effects, how to properly compose a painting within the frame of your canvas, how to achieve textured looks, etc. But the best part, is that you will get to take home your very own work of art once you are finished. If these reasons aren’t enough to have you excited to take one of these courses, then how does the BYOB part sound?
